I'd like to be like him when I grow up...hah, fat chance! MANAS, a "weekly journal of independent inquiry," ceased publication on December 28, 1988, not quite 41 years after its first issue. Henry Geiger, the man who conceived the publication and wrote almost every word of each eight-page issue, died February 15, 1989, at the age of 80.Abraham Maslow once called him "the only small 'p' philosopher America has produced in this century"' and a Canadian journalist who read MANAS for six months but had never met Geiger wrote a feature column about him entitled "Socrates Lives Again in Los Angeles."

ReplyDeleteA friend gave me some original copies of MANAS copies a few years back and one of them had that wonderful photo of Henry Geiger. I took the liberty of scanning and posting the photo to illustrate the post since most of his work is freely available on the MANAS website.
His work sometimes reminds of some of the very best novelists in the insight he has into human nature-I’ve experienced more than a few epiphanies and pure joy at really ‘seeing’ something for the first time while reading his stuff.
Very well put. And that friend of yours with the original copies of MANAS is a rare soul indeed - and not just because the journal's circulation hovered round just 2500. I went out of my way on my late blog last year to tub-thump big time on behalf of MANAS, and am doing so even now in comment posts at, e.g., Rod Dreher's "Crunchy Con" blog at BeliefNet. I feel Geiger's mission here - it truly is a labor of love, though it will take some while to say the least to raise the journal's profile among the reading public (think of another such kindred visionary as, e.g., William Blake, who lived and died a virtual unknown, dismissed as an eccentric and worse until decades after his death).

Great review of MANAS and Geiger. Yesterday I found my CD-ROM of MANAS and read about the Bhagavad Gita and Ivan Illich. Geiger says this in his review of Illich's "Tools for Conviviality": "Throughout Illich invites the reader to reflect on what 'the good life' really means, and to recognize that the pursuit of a misconception of the good life makes it absolutely impossible to achieve. He works for the release of people from the debilitating oppressions of their own thinking..." Absolutely Brilliant!

The articles are all so refreshing and I feel unafraid and unashamed of saying that they give me hope. I still believe in people, in human beings. I still believe that there are a great number of people who want to do the 'right' thing. It is MANAS and all that it stands for that allows people to explore, question, and investigate this issue of 'right'. American foreign policy would do well to explore this issue of 'right' as it relates to some of the Manas Journal's central tenets.
ReplyDeleteI was so glad to have found access to the forty years of Manas. I had subscribed to the journal just before publication ended, and I've treasured my copies ever since. At the time I was living in a packing crate in Barrow, Alaska, overlooking the Arctic Ocean, and they were a reminder to me that meaning still existed in the world which I had escaped. The last generation that had a memory of that meaning has already died off, I think, but forty years of issues, wow! I can now read one a week till the end of my life!
